Lausanne' Switzerland -- FILA, the international federation for the sport of wrestling, today announced that the organization would hold its extraordinary Congress May 18 in Moscow to elect a new president and discuss a variety of issues concerning keeping the sport in the Olympic Games.
"We have decided that Moscow will be the site of this important congress," Acting President Nenad Lavolic said from FILA headquarters. "We appreciate this invitation and their quick response to our request."
Lavolic replaced Raphael Martinetti who resigned from his position February 16 at the FILA Bureau meeting in Phuket, Thailand. The new president of the federation will serve until September of 2014, when the FILA Congress will elect a president for a six-year term.
At the May meeting in Moscow, FILA will discuss more involvement of athletes in the governing Bureau as well as other committees and positions within the organization.
"It's time for us to utilize the passion and knowledge of our athletes, both men and women," Lalovic said. "They will help us to be better."
