LINCOLN "” Jordan Burroughs is the defending national champion. Maybe the best collegiate wrestler in the country.
On this night, he is bawling.
Lying on the cold concrete in the Nebraska Coliseum locker room. Wearing nothing but underwear and sweat-stained socks. His left knee throbs. His phone rings "” eight, nine, 10 times.
It's Mom and Dad back home in New Jersey. What can he say?
That less than 10 minutes on the mat just ruined his 44-match winning streak? That his hopes of winning the Hodge Trophy, wrestling's version of the Heisman, were as good as gone?
