Assistant Coach Issues: Answered by a youth sports expert

by Responsible Sports
Each week, we ask the Responsible Sports Community to write in a scenario or issue they face to get the opinion and insight from Positive Coaching Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to celebrating and championing the positive youth sports movement.
A recent question that came into the Responsible Sports community was:
"My assistant coach's style tends to be aggressive and less than positive. At times it seems we are competing to be the head coach and I have to continue to reel him in and very carefully remind him that he and I need to communicate better in order to work together better. How do I prevent this situation from getting out of hand? And should I ask this coach to step down and just be a parent?"
What would you do as a coach? See the response
The Liberty Mutual Responsible SportsTM program supports volunteer youth sports coaches and parents who help our children succeed both on and off the mat. We offer many youth sports resources including $2,500 community grants, instructional videos, weekly tips, peer and expert advice, and coursework for those interested in improving the youth sports experience for all involved.
