ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The 2010 U.S. Beach National Wrestling Championships and World Team Trials will be held on Ontario Beach Park (also called Charlotte Beach) in Rochester, N.Y., July 9-11, 2010.
It will be the fourth year in a row that Rochester has hosted the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials, and the event has grown each of the previous seasons. In 2009, a record 125 participants entered the U.S. Beach Nationals in Rochester.
"USA Wrestling is proud of its relationship with the Rochester wrestling community and the Monroe County Sports Commission. The U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials continue to grow in size and prestige. The local organizing committee puts together a world-class event, and showcases Beach wrestling at the highest level," said Pete Isais, USA Wrestling National Events Director.
The local organizing committee is the Team Titan Worldwide Wrestling Club, an active and respected USA Wrestling sanctioned club in the community.
"Rochester, New York is excited to have the 2010 U.S. Beach National Wrestling Championships return for a fourth consecutive year! The community has embraced the event and beach wrestling," said event director Lou Lombardo.
The 2010 U.S. Beach National Championships will be held on Saturday, July 10, with competition in five age groups: Schoolboy/girl, Cadet, Junior, Senior (men and women) and Veterans. In all age groups, weight classes will be determined after weighins, using the blocked weight system.
A team belt award wil be given to the top club at the Beach National Championships. Standings will be determined based upon points earned in all age divisions. The defending champion is the Worldwide/Team Titan from New York.
The Senior Beach World Team Trials will be held on Sunday, July 11. Participants must qualify for this event at the U.S. Beach Nationals the previous day. The Senior Beach World Team Trials will determine the U.S. athletes who will compete in 2010 FILA World Beach Wrestling Championships, set for Cerna Gore, Montenegro, August 28-29.
For the third year, the National High School Beach Duals will also be held on Sunday, July 11. High school club teams can enter this competition, and battle for team trophies and bragging rights. A record number of teams entered the 2009 competition. The addition of the High School Duals gives athletes two full days of quality wrestling. Team Titan Worldwide I is the defending champion.
Held alongside the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials will be a number of other exciting sports events at the beach, including a professional jet ski competition, skateboarding and beach volleyball, along with music and other entertainment.
"Team Titan Worldwide Wrestling Club and the Rochester community is proud of the yearly competition," said Lombardo. "Crowds of spectators have grown consistently and participation numbers continue to climb. With our partnership with Monroe County Sports Commission, non-wrestling events are continuously being added to the weekend. Rochester, NY is poised to host an even bigger and better event in 2010. Where will you be in July, 2010? Circle the calendar and make plans to compete in the 2010 USA Wrestling National Beach Wrestling Championships!"
Beach Wrestling was added as a new style of international wrestling, starting in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features takedowns within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation.
USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.
