USA Wrestling is proud to report that its membership totals five months into the 2009-2010 fiscal year are reaching record levels, especially in the category of athlete members.

In its January 31, 2010 membership report, USA Wrestling has registered 85,110 athlete members. This is a jump of 10,439 members above the total registered after five months last year, an incredible 14% leap in membership. In addition, the five-month athlete membership total last year was also a record at the time.

"This is a huge testament to our volunteers at the state and club level. Through their recruitment and retention of athlete members, our coaches and volunteers are the driving force behind our membership," said Manager of State Services Tony Black.

"This is a reflection of the outstanding efforts of our state associations in processing its membership in a timely fashion. It also can be attributed to increased usage by our members of our online membership registration system," said Black.

Two other areas are running ahead of last year's totals, which were also records at that time: club charters and sanctioned events.

There were 2,711 chartered clubs as of January 31, 2010, up from 2,581 a year ago after five months. There were also 1,278 sanctioned events, up from 1,123 at this time last year.

"These three categories are a sign of the overall health of the organization," said Black. "An increase in event sanctions shows that there is more opportunity for our members to compete. An increase in club charters shows that our members have more opportunity to practice and participate in our programs."

USA Wrestling is also pleased to report that officials membership is also up from last year after five months, jumping to 1,233 this year in comparison to 1,086 last year.

A total of 36 USA Wrestling state associations, which is a strong majority of the state programs, have shown an increase in athlete membership at the five month mark. Some of these organizations have shown significant increases since last year.

They include: (alphabetically): Alaska, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Minnesota, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New York, North Dakota, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wisconsin.

Black points out the effort in Arkansas, which has signed up 278 athlete members to date, only one fewer than it registered all last year. Many other states are tracking to set membership records for the year.

This year, USA Wrestling has launched some new programs, including the creation of the USA Wrestling Nation online community, a new social network for the entire wrestling community.

"Our members are finding value in membership with USA Wrestling, the most prominent wrestling organization in the nation," said Black. "We are committed to continued improvement in all of our programs, and are excited to serve the wrestling community as its national governing body."
