Lock Haven, Pa. - Jarrod King of Edinboro has been named the PSAC Wrestler of the Year for the second straight season, highlighting the 2009-10 PSAC postseason wrestling awards.
Clarion freshman James Fleming is the PSAC Freshman of the Year, marking the second straight year that a Golden Eagles has claimed the PSAC award for the top freshman.
Edinboro head coach Tim Flynn is the PSAC Coach of the Year, marking the fourth straight year that he has garnered the award.
The PSAC wrestling awards are voted on by the head coaches in the PSAC from both the NCAA Division I and Division II wrestling programs. All coaches and wrestlers at both the D1 and DII programs in the PSAC are eligible for the awards.
King, who entered the season as the defending NCAA Division I champion at the 165 pound weight class, wrapped up his outstanding career with the Fighting Scots by becoming an All-American for the second straight season with a third place finish at 165 at the NCAA championships. His performance helped the Fighting Scots to a 16th place finish at the NCAA meet, the top finish among EWL teams. King, who finished his career at Edinboro after wrestling for one season at Oklahoma, finished his career with a 103-16 career record at Edinboro and an overall record of 125-27. He went 39-2 this year after being granted a sixth year of eligibility by the NCAA prior to this year. In addition to his accomplishments at nationals this year, King also won an individual title at both the PSAC championships and EWL championships for the third straight year. He was also named the EWL Wrestler of the Year last month for the second straight season.
Fleming becomes the second straight Clarion wrestler to claim the PSAC Freshman of the Year award, following teammate Clint Podish last year. Fleming wrapped up his freshman year with a 28-8 record, qualifying for the NCAA Division I championships, where he went 0-2 at 149 pounds to cap an outstanding inaugural season at the collegiate level. The freshman placed fourth at the PSAC championships and second at the EWL championships.
Flynn, who recently completed his 13th season as the head coach of the Fighting Scots, earns the PSAC Coach of the Year award for not only the fourth straight season but also for the ninth time in 13 years at the helm of the Edinboro program. This year, he guided the Fighting Scots to their fifth straight PSAC championships and their 11th in his 13 seasons. He also coached Edinboro to its eighth straight EWL championship and its 12th in 13 years as the Scots won 16 straight matches to close out the tournament. Edinboro finished in 16th place at the NCAA Division I championships, marking the fourth time in the last five years that the Fighting Scots have finished in the top 20 at the NCAA meet. In addition to King, Torsten Gillespie was also an All-American this year, giving the Scots 26 All-Americans in Flynn's 13-year tenure as head coach.
