Russia's Soslan Ktsoev won the European Championships at 84 kg/185 lbs., but the Russian freestyle team may have a different wrestler on the mat for the Worlds.
Abdulsalam Gadisov won the Russian Nationals and has to be considered one of the favorites if he does compete in Denmark. Gadisov was a 2008 Junior World champion.
The competition in this class is set for Sept. 22 in Herning, Denmark.
Azerbaijan's Nauruz Temrezov won the World Cup and placed third in the Europeans this year. He placed seventh in the 2008 Olympics.
2007 World bronze medalist Zaurbek Sokhiev of Uzbekistan is another wrestler to keep an eye on. He recently placed second in a big tournament in Azerbaijan.
Iran is very deep at this weight and could send any of a number of top guys to the Worlds.
Iran's Reza Yazdani placed second at the World Cup this year. He won a bronze medal at the 2006 and 2007 World Championships. Iran's Ehsan Lashgari won the Asian Championships this year. Iran's Jamal Mirzaei won the Heydar Aliyev Golden Grand Prix in July in Azerbaijan. Mirzaei is expected to compete for Iran at the Worlds.
Ibrahim Aldatov of the Ukraine won a silver medal at this year's European Championships.
Cuba's Reineris Salas won the Pan American Championships. He placed 10th at the 2008 Olympics.
The U.S. has another newcomer in this weight class in 2008 World University bronze medalist Jake Herbert, who won the Hodge Trophy as the outstanding college wrestler in 2009.
Herbert has fared well in international events, winning the Dave Schultz Memorial in 2008. Herbert beat Germany's Davyd Bichinashvili, who placed fifth in the 2008 Olympics, in that event.
Georgia's Revaz Mindorashvili won the Olympics in 2008, but has not been competing this season.
