U.S. wins nine gold medals at Pan American Junior Championships in Mexico, Oct. 23-25

GUADALAJARA, Mexico - The United States won nine individual gold medals during the Pan American Junior Wrestling Championships, held October 23-25.

Claiming a gold medal in both the Greco-Roman and men's freestyle competitions was Ben Provisor of Wisconsin at 84 kg/185 lbs.

FILA Juniors are athletes who are 17-20 years old. The Pan American Championships feature the nations from North, Central and South America.

Three individual U.S. women were champions: Ashley Shannon at 44 kg/97 lbs., Gabrielle Henry at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. and Randi Beltz at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

The U.S. won the team title in women's wrestling with 67 points, followed by Canada with 65 points and Mexico with 63 points.

Four individual U.S. Greco-Roman wrestlers were champions: Josh Castellano (USA) at 74 kg/163 lbs., Mark Stenberg at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Scott Helton at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. and Provisor.

The U.S. was second in the Greco-Roman standings with 58 points, behind champion Mexico with 63 points. Peru placed third with 47 points.

Two individual U.S. freestyle wrestlers were champions: Tanner Andrews at 66 kg/145.5 lbs. and Provisor.

The U.S. was third in the freestyle standings, with a five-athlete team, with 46 points. Claiming the team title was Mexico with 67 points, followed by Canada with 58 points.

In total, the United States won 17 medals in the three Olympic styles.
