USA Wrestling sets membership records in three categories in 2008-09 year

USA Wrestling, the national governing body for amateur wrestling in the United States, has set or tied records in three major membership categories during the 2008-09 year.
The 2008-2009 membership year, which ended on August 31, 2009, set annual records for athletes, clubs, and sanctioned event.
During the 2008-09 year, USA Wrestling registered 148,767 athlete members, topping the previous mark of 147,014 set during the 2007-08 year.
For the fifth consecutive year, USA Wrestling chartered clubs reached a new level, climbing to 3,693 clubs. The previous high was 3,511 clubs, which was set in the previous membership year.
Sanctioned events rose to 1,807 in 2008-09, another record. It was an increase from the 1,762 events which were sanctioned in both the 2007-08 and the 2006-07 year.
The membership records were possible through the efforts of USA Wrestling's volunteer leaders on the regional, state and local levels, who provided the most comprehensive program of wrestling activities in the nation.
"We're incredibly proud of USA Wrestling's growth again this past membership year. The lifeblood of our organization is membership, most notably athlete membership, so it's great to set a record number of athletes who are part of USA Wrestling," said Tony Black, USA Wrestling's Manager of State Services. "Our organization is largely volunteer-based, so this is a great testament to the thousands of volunteers nationwide who breathe wrestling year-round and contribute so much to USA Wrestling and to our great sport."
For the membership year ending August 31, 2009, USA Wrestling is proud to announce that 31 states increased their athlete membership from the year before. Those state organizations and their leaders should be commended for their hard work and effort.
The states with athlete growth this year were: Alabama, Alaska, Arkansas, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Iowa, Kansas, Maryland, Minnesota, Missouri, Montana, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oregon, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, Wisconsin, Wyoming.
There were 33 states that increased the number of chartered clubs: Alabama, Arizona, Arkansas, California, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Illinois, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maine, Massachusetts, Minnesota, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New Mexico, New York, North Carolina, North Dakota, Oklahoma, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming.
A total of 23 states showed an increase in the number of sanctioned events: Arizona, Arkansas, California, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia, West Virginia.
A total of 21 states experienced growth in the coach membership category: Alabama, Arkansas, Colorado, Illinois, Minnesota, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, Ohio, Oregon, Rhode Island, South Carolina, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, West Virginia, Wyoming.
Seven states showed increases over last year in all four of these categories (athletes, coaches, clubs and sanctioned events): Arkansas, Illinois, Minnesota, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Virginia.
USA Wrestling is excited about the new 2009-10 year, and will work hard to continue to increase opportunities within wrestling all across the nation.
