TEHRAN, Iran - 2008 University World champion Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal match at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. on the final day of the 2009 Takhti Cup.

Dlagnev defeated Ahmad Rasouli of Iran, 2-0, 2-1 in the bronze medal match.

"Tervel hit a nice low single, stood up and came behind for the first takedown. Rasouli tried to shoot in on him late in the period and Tervel got behind him for the second point. In the second period, he got arm-spinned, and Rasouli led 1-0. Tervel got a leg attack, brought it to a double leg, split him and took him to his back for two points and the win," said National Teams Director Mitch Hull.

The three other U.S. wrestlers who competed on Friday were unable to qualify for the medal rounds.

The U.S. won two bronze medals at the Takhti Cup this year. Mike Tamillow (Colorado Springs, Colo./unattached) captured a bronze medal at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. on Thursday.

The United States placed third in the team standings, behind the champion team from Iran and the runner-up team from Russia.

The tour went very well for the U.S. delegation, which was competing in Iran for the eighth time since the historic initial trip in 1998.

"The experience was very good. They are great hosts," said Hull. "Hopefully, we have been able to start a long-term relationship. Both sides are very interested in having Iran come over to the United States for competition soon."

Coaching the U.S. team was National Freestyle Coach Zeke Jones and Assistant National Freestyle Coach Brandon Slay.

Attending the tour as a special USA Wrestling delegate was 2008 Olympic gold medalist Henry Cejudo, who won the 55 kg/121 lbs. in freestyle wrestling at the Beijing Olympic Games. Cejudo competed in the 2007 Takhti Cup and won a silver medal.

USA Wrestling sponsored the first American sports team to compete in Iran after an absence of nearly 20 years, when a U.S. freestyle wrestling team competed in the 1998 Takhti Cup.

This is the seventh time a U.S. team has competed in the Takhti Cup (1998, 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2007, 2009). The U.S. also competed at the 1998 World Championships held in Tehran, Iran.
