Lindenwood wins third straight NAIA team title, led by three champions

Oklahoma City, Okla. - Defending national champion Lindenwood (Mo.) has won the team title at the 2009 National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) Wrestling National Championships.

With the victory, the Lions win their third consecutive national championship and fifth overall. Lindenwood finished the tournament with 167 points, dominating the field.

Southern Oregon finishes in second place with 125.5 points. McKendree (Ill.) is third with 123 points. Missouri Valley is in fourth with 109.5 points. Rounding out the top five is Notre Dame (Ohio) with 84 points.

The Lions were the first three-peat champion since Montana State-Northern in 2000.

Lindenwood had three national champions, Matt Cauley (174), Ray Stephens (133) and Jeremy Powell (157) and two runners-up, Sam Schmitz (149) and John Murray (165).

Rounding out the All-Americans for Lindenwood were: Chris Chionuma (165), Jon Lloyd (133) and Ryan Moyer (149) earned fifth place honors in the tournament.

Three grapplers successfully defended their 2008 individual titles. Montana State-Northern senior Corey Borges (125 lb.), Lindenwood senior Raymond Stephens (133 lb.) and Lindenwood senior Matt Cauley (174 lb.) each won their Championship Finals matches to retain their titles.

Matt Cauley of Lindenwood was named the 2009 NAIA Most Outstanding Wrestler of the Tournament while Lindenwood head coach Joe Parisi was named the 2009 NAIA Wrestling Coach of the Year.
