COLORADO SPRINGS, COLO. - The match went down to the last bout, with the United States emerging with a tight 22-17 victory over Germany in a dual meet held at Doherty High School on Wednesday night.

With USA leading 19-17 after eight matches, Kelsey Campbell (Tempe, Ariz./Sunkist Kids) scored a clutch 4-0, 1-0 shutout over Nicole Hauptmann of Germany at 55 kg/121 lbs. to seal the victory.

"I really wanted to wrestle out there. I feel this year I have not performed like I want to. It is about being mentally ready and performing. My goal was to wrestle the way I am capable," said Campbell. "Any time you can wrestle an international opponent is good. You can't scout them. You need to maximize this opportunity. It is not every day that you get to train and compete against these girls. I wanted to take advantage of it."

The United States won five of the nine matches contested. A number of athletes wrestled more than one match, giving important international experience to both teams.

"It was a good meet," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "There were things I didn't think we were doing enough of. We didn't control the pace enough. We need to use the entire period to make our conditioning a factor. Overall, we had a lot of women who needed some mat time and we got some good matches."

All of the athletes competing in the dual meet are expected to compete at the annual Dave Schultz Memorial International in Colorado Springs, Colo., Feb. 5-7.

Germany opened with a pair of victories in the dual meet

At 48 kg/105.5 lbs., as Alexandra Englehardt defeated Sara Fulp-Allen (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC), 3-0, 4-2 Englehardt scored a takedown and two-point arm bar tilt in the first period. In the second period, Englehardt jumped to a 4-0 lead, but Fulp-Allen scored two late takedowns but could not close the gap.

Stefanie Steuber of Germany followed with a three-period win over Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo. /New York AC), 3-0, 0-1, 3-0 at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

The first U.S. win came at 59 kg/130 lbs., when 2007 World Team member Leigh Jaynes (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) scored late in the third period to defeat Maria Selmaier, 1-0, 0-4, 3-1.

"The first match scoring at the last seconds was new for me. I am usually a counter-offense person. It was a good experience. I got the Dave Schultz jitters out by wrestling here," said Jaynes.

Next at 55 kg/121 lbs., 2007 Junior World champion Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) pinned Nicole Hauptmann of Germany, 1-0, 0:53.

"It was nice to get the pin," said Conder. "I felt really good wrestling out there. I have not been on the mat a lot the last few months."

Conder is one of the new generation of young women who are training full-time at the U.S. Olympic Training Center. She came to Colorado Springs after starting her career at the U.S. Olympic Education Center at Northern Michigan Univ.

"I love it here. It is a lot of fun and I am learning a lot," said Conder.

Germany won a match at 55 kg/121 lbs. when Aline Focken scored a technical fall over Trinity Plessinger (Colorado Springs, Colo./Unattached). The U.S. bounced right back with a bit win at 51 kg/112 lbs., when Jessica Medina (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) beat Alexandra Engelhardt, 1-0, 1-1.

"I felt pretty good out there. I believe I could have opened up a little bit more. I was sure to be aggressive early in the period. I am excited to wrestle and get more experience. These matches will help get me ready. I enjoy getting this international experience," said Medina.

Stueber won her second match of the night for Germany, when she pinned Jaynes in 43 seconds of the first period at 63 kg/138.5 lbs. That gave Germany a 17-14 lead with just two matches left.

Rix, who was fifth at the 2008 Women's World Championships, came back with a clutch pin of her own, putting away Selmaier with a pin in the second period, 1-0, 0:38. Rix hit a headlock to put Selmaier on her back then pressed for the fall.

"It is good to get some live matches before the Schultz Tournament. Wrestling foreign people is very good. They wrestle differently than we do," said Rix. "The (headlock) is something I have worked on from the front headlock position. I work the move, and when they come up, I hit my headlock."

Campbell followed the Rix pin with her win in the last match to give the USA the final margin of victory.

The Doherty vs. Rampart high school dual meet followed the women's event, giving local wrestling fans a full night of wrestling action.
