CORVALLIS, Ore. - The U.S. won a pair of women's wrestling exhibition matches against Canada during the halftime break at the Oregon State vs. Iowa State dual meet on Sunday afternoon.
2007 Junior World champion Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) needed three period to defeat 2008 University World champion Miranda Dick of Canada, 1-0, 1-2, 3-0 at 55 kg/121 lbs.
Conder won the first period on a leg-attack takedown, but dropped the second period when Dick countered one of her shots. She won the third period when she scored a takedown then turned Dick with a gut wrench.
"Whitney is just coming back to live wrestling after being injured. It showed. She was a little rusty. But the fight was there," said USA Wrestling Assistant National Women's Coach and Developmental Coach Izzy Izboinikov.
2008 University World champion Elena Pirozkhova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) scored a second period pin over 2007 Junior World bronze medalist Stacie Anaka of Canada.
Pirozkhova scored the only takedown of the first period. In the second period, she took a single leg takedown to Anaka's back for three points, then finished off the move with a fall after just 19 seconds.
"They have wrestled each other before, and they know a lot about each other," said Izboinikov. "It went well, but I would like to see more offense from Elena's part."
The women's matches were well received by the crowd who were there to see top Div. I wrestling action.
"I don't think many of the people here have see a whole lot of women's wrestling, but they have heard about it," said Oregon State assistant coach Troy Steiner, who has coached a number of U.S. women's teams. "It was good to get it out in from of them and let them see this level of women's wrestling. It was perceived well by our fans."
This was the second of these special USA Wrestling women's exhibition bouts held during major college dual meets this year. The first was held at the Lehigh vs. Michigan dual meet in Bethlehem, Pa. on November 21, where the USA swept a pair of matches against Canada. One additional women's wrestling exhibitions is planned for later in the college season.
Iowa State, ranked No. 3 in the nation, won eight of 10 matches to capture the dual meet over Oregon State, 29-6. Included were victories by nationally ranked No. 1 Jake Varner at 197 pounds and No. 2 Nick Gallick at 141 pounds.
Oregon State's winners were Heinrich Barnes at 149 pounds and Kyle Bressler at 174 pounds.
"We fought a lot harder than we did last year," head coach Jim Zalesky said. We just didn't give ourselves enough chances to win, and we didn't pace ourselves well enough. I thought Heinrich [Barnes] and [Kyle] Bressler had good matches for us."
Members of the 1973 NCAA Championship Runner-Up Oregon State wrestling squad were honored prior to the start of the meet.
