KIEV, Ukraine - Two U.S. women freestyle wrestlers won bronze medals, the highlight of the U.S. team effort on the final day of the Ukrainian Memorial International on Sunday.

Capturing bronze medals on Sunday were Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Whitney Conder (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC), both competing at 59 kg/130 lbs.

Rix finished the meet with a 3-1 record, including a victory over Amanda Gerhardt of Canada in the bronze-medal match. Rix was fifth at the 2008 World Championships at his weight class.

Conder opened with a loss, but won her final two bouts, including a win over 2007 Junior World champion Yulia Ostapchuk of Ukraine. Conder was also a 2007 Junior World champion, winning her title at 51 kg/112.25 lbs., while Ostapchuk won the gold medal at 63 kg/138.75 lbs.

Conder wrestled for the second straight day, after competing on Saturday at 55 kg/121 lbs. and losing in the opening round.

Rix and Conder were the only U.S. women wrestlers competing Sunday. There were eight U.S. men's freestyle wrestlers wrestling Sunday, none who were able to win a medal.

Of the group, only two U.S. freestylers won a match during the day: Dustin Schlatter (Massilon, Ohio/Minnesota Storm) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Mike Tamillow (Colorado Springs, Colo./Unattached) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.

The U.S. won five medals during the weekend. On Saturday, U.S. champions were Tervel Dlagnev (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs. in men's freestyle and Elena Pirozhkova (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. in women's freestyle. Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) won a bronze medal at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. in the women's division.

"It was a very large tournament," said Assistant National Freestyle Coach Bill Zadick. "Ukraine had many wrestlers in each weight. Russia had some of their better young guys. Iran had some of their top developmental athletes, who were young and tough. We have a lot of work to do as a country. It was great to see Tervel (Dlagnev) win. He had a great tournament yesterday. We had no highlights today."
