Excitement builds for U.S. Beach Nationals & World Team Trials in Rochester, N.Y., July 17-19

Wrestlers from across the nation in many age-groups are expected to compete at the 2009 U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials plus the National High School Duals which will be held July 17-19 at Ontario Beach Park in Rochester, N.Y.
With the tournament held a few weeks later in the summer this year and additional entertainment activity during the weekend, organizers expect an increase in the participation at all levels.
"We are very excited and optimistic about things," said Event Director Lou Lombardo. "There has been considerable local media coverage and many inquiries from athletes and teams about the event.
The discounted entry fee for the Beach Nationals and World Team Trials is $20 if preregistered by 6:00 PM (EST) on Tuesday, July 14th at the link below:

Onsite registration and weighins are available on Friday night, July 17 from 7-9 p.m. at Cheeburger Cheeburger and on Saturday morning, July 18th from 8-10 a.m. at Ontario Beach Park. The price for those registering onsite is: $25 for Schoolboy/girl, Cadet, and Juniors; $30 for Seniors and Veterans.
There will be a ton of fun things going on at the Beach Nationals this year. There will be a Beach Volleyball event, the Professional Jet-Ski competition, a new amateur and professional skateboard event, plus the Monroe County Sports and Music Festival.
On the Senior level, the U.S. Beach Nationals on Saturday is the qualifying event for the U.S. Beach World Team Trials on Sunday. The top three in each weight class from the Senior division on Saturday qualify to compete at the World Team Trials on Sunday.
The World Team Trials event sets the U.S. team for the 2009 Beach World Wrestling Championships in Obzor, Bulgaria, August 28-30.
Two-time World Beach bronze medalist Jeff Funicello (Gilbert, Ariz./American Pankration) has indicated that he will attend the event again this year. The U.S. has never had an individual Beach World champion since the sport has been developed.
Organizers expect strong turnouts at the U.S. Beach Nationals in all age divisions, which include Cadet (Born 1993-1994), Schoolboy/girl (Born 1995-1996), Junior (Born September 1, 1989 & after, plus enrolled in grades 9-12), Senior (Men, born 1989 or before; 1990-1991 with medical certificate. Women, born 1989 or before; 1990-1992 with medical certificate), and Veterans (Born 1974 and before). All age-group weight classes to be determined after weigh-ins using the block system. International athletes (including Canadians) are eligible in all age group divisions, excluding the Senior age group divisions (Men and Women).
The National High School Beach Duals will also be held on Sunday, July 19. High school teams can enter the tournament to win team awards and compete for bragging rights.
There are expected to be at least 10 teams participating in the Beach Duals on Sunday, an increase from last year. Other teams can still enter. The entry fee for the High School Beach Duals is $100 per team. Team rosters must be submitted by 12:00 noon on Saturday, July 18.

Beach Wrestling was added as a new style of international wrestling, starting in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features takedowns within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation.
USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.
