Since word came out last year that Cornell wrestler Adam Frey had cancer, the wrestling community has rallied to support this impressive young man in the battle of his life.
On Sunday, July 12, there will be a chance for those who know him, and for others who just keep him in their prayers, to come together to help raise funds for his recovery.
"New Jersey Wrestles Against Cancer" is a wrestling clinic and All-Star match set for Rider University in Lawrenceville, N.J. on July 12. Numerous respected clinicians will provide instruction, then there will be as many as 17 exhibition matches between active college wrestlers.
The cost is $20, which will only be available at the door. The clinic is set for 1:00 p.m. and the match is at 3:00 p.m. A barbeque will be going all day long, and there will be raffles for prizes. All proceeds from the event go directly to the Adam Frey Fund.
"Adam and I talked a few months ago and thought it would be nice to get people together to do something with wrestling," said Josh Liebman, who is a key organizer of the event.
"It got going by word of mouth. I used to coach the Cadet and Junior teams in New Jersey and also in high school. I started calling and asking some kids and some coaches to help. The kids would then ask their friends. Once it got started, people started calling me to get involved. We got some really quality kids and great clinicians," said Liebman.
The lineup of clinicians is impressive. Among them is Jeff Buxton, Frey's coach at Blair Academy. Clinicians from Rider are John Hangey and Jason Nase, and from Rutgers are Cory Cooperman and Frank Edgar. Current college wrestlers Zac Tannelli of Wisconsin, Hudson Taylor of Maryland and Kellen Russell of Michigan will also instruct. Respected coach Dave Esposito is also a clinician.
The All-Star lineup features numerous well-known college wrestlers, many who are nationally ranked. Some of the athletes knew him through Blair Academy, and others met him as he competed in New Jersey, Pennsylvania and neighboring states. The athletes wrestle at numerous major college programs from across the nation.
The athletes will be competing in a 4-minute modified folkstyle match. There will be two periods of two minutes, with both starting on the feet. The pushout rule from freestyle will be in effect. If there is no action on the mat, the wrestlers go back to the feet.
"We want to have a lot of action and to put on a great show," said Liebman. "This is a fundraiser and these are exhibition matches. We want to have fun."
Frey will be attending the event in person, something that everybody is excited about.
"Adam is very excited. He talks about what we should do at the event. He is looking forward to having everybody in one location. There are a lot of guys from Blair and a lot of guys from New Jersey he knows. He is excited to see everybody," said Liebman.
Besides the hosts at Rider and the athletes and coaches who are directly involved, there are others have stepped up to help make it happen.
Debbie Tavares from Freedom Travel, who is active in New Jersey wrestling, has provided the flights to bring Frey to New Jersey from his home in Pittsburgh and is providing the hotel accommodations. Her company is also donating to the raffle.
Cliff Keen and Worldwide Sports Supply are providing Adam Frey Classic specialty singlets which include a ribbon signifying the battle against cancer.
"From the feedback I have been getting lately, I am expecting a great crowd. It would be great if we could fill the gym," said Liebman.
Anybody who has an opportunity to get to Rider on July 12 is encouraged to come out for a great time with the wrestling community, all for a great cause.
