USA Grappling is excited that it can showcase its top domestic event alongside the Sunkist Kids International Open, which features many of the best wrestlers in the nation and around the world.
"We are pleased to add the U.S. Grappling World Team Trials alongside the Sunkist Kids International Open," said Kim Martori-Wickey, Executive Director of the Sunkist Kids. "It should be an outstanding event. We are excited to have a World Team Trials event with the Sunkist Kids International for the first time. It will be great to have a new audience at the event, and for people to see the different styles at the time."
The U.S. is encouraging all of the nation's best Grapplers to enter the tournament and try out for the U.S. team.
The United States is the defending World Champion team in both No-Gi and Gi Grappling, after winning team titles at the first FILA Grappling World Championships in Switzerland in 2008. Everybody expects that the 2009 World Championships in Fort Lauderdale will be the most competitive ever, and the U.S. will need to be well prepared if it hopes to defend its World Title.
"We encourage all Grapplers to compete in our U.S. Grappling World Team Trials," said USA Grappling National Coach Ricardo Liborio. "With the World Championships held in the United States this year, we expect the competition to be at its highest level."
Liborio is excited about bringing together the nation's best Grapplers and preparing them to face the world.
"We expect to bring our team together to train in Florida at American Top Team," said Liborio. "We will bring quality coaches and athletes to our training camp, to help the U.S. team gain the experience and skills it takes to win."
USA Grappling is inviting Grapplers who have competed for other organizations, as well as those who have not yet tried the FILA Grappling rules, to come to Phoenix and test themselves against the nation's best.
"USA Grappling is excited to have our Trials alongside such a great event. We want to thank Art and Kim Martori for their help in making this event happen," said Jeff Levitetz, Managing Director of USA Grappling. "We are looking forward to having a great tournament and are excited about Grappling's future with USA Wrestling."
Those who have not competed under the FILA Grappling rules can review the updated rulebook, which is posted on TheMat.com.
