ROCHESTER, N.Y. - The 2009 U.S. Beach National Wrestling Championships and World Team Trials will be held on Ontario Beach Park (also called Charlotte Beach) in Rochester, N.Y., July 17-19.
Please note that this is a date change from what was previously announced by USA Wrestling for this competition.
It will be the third year in a row that Rochester has hosted the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials, and the event has grown each of the previous seasons. The event will also return to Rochester in 2010, and is expected to be held earlier in July that year.
"USA Wrestling is excited to continue its relationship with the Rochester wrestling community and the Monroe County Sports Commission to host the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials for the next two years," said USA Wrestling National Events Director Pete Isais. "The local organizers have done a tremendous job presenting an outstanding event, providing a great wrestling experience for the athletes and families that attend."
"The Rochester, N.Y. community is excited to host the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials again," said Louis Lombardo, the event director. "The wrestling community here has embraced the beach wrestling event. We look forward to continued growth of this year's event."
The U.S. Beach National Championships will be held on Saturday, July 18, with competition in five age groups: Schoolboy/girl, Cadet, Junior, Senior (men and women) and Veterans. In all age groups, weight classes will be determined after weighins, using the blocked weight system.
A team belt award wil be given to the top club at the Beach National Championships. Standings will be determined based upon points earned in all age divisions. The defending champion is the Worldwide/Team Titan from New York.
The Senior Beach World Team Trials will be held on Sunday, July 19. Participants must qualify for this event at the U.S. Beach Nationals the previous day. The Senior Beach World Team Trials will determine the U.S. athletes who will compete in FILA World Beach Wrestling Championships, set for Bulgaria, August 29-30.
For the second year, the National High School Beach Duals will also be held on Sunday, July 19. High school club teams can enter this competition, and battle for team trophies and bragging rights. The addition of the High School Duals gives athletes two full days of quality competition.
Held alongside the U.S. Beach Nationals and World Team Trials will be a number of other exciting sports events at the beach, including a professional jet ski competition and beach volleyball.
Beach Wrestling was added as a new style of international wrestling, starting in 2005. Athletes compete on sand, in a style that features takedowns within a ring. The sport has been growing in popularity across the nation.
USA Wrestling has sanctioned Beach events since 2005, and held its first U.S. Beach National Championships and World Team Trials in 2006. FILA hosted the first World Championships in 2006 in Antalya, Turkey.
