Gomez, Hartman, Porter win bronze, U.S. women are second at U20 Beach Worlds in Greece
by Gary Abbott, USA Wrestling
KATERINI, Greece – Team USA ran off with three bronze medals, and the U.S. women captured the second-place team trophy, rallying during the medal matches to conclude a competitive day at the 2025 U20 Beach World Championships on the sand at Aloha Beach Bar on Friday.
The morning session showed great promise, after the USA powered six athletes into the championship bracket, with five qualifying for the semifinals and one for the quarterfinals. This included three men and three women, all with a chance to fight for a gold medal.
The start of the second session was terrible for Team USA, as all six wrestlers were defeated, meaning nobody from the USA had advanced to the gold-medal match. Almost all of those losses were very close, a few heartbreaking. Rather than allow the losses to crush their spirit, the team came back with a new spirit.
The USA had five bronze-medal matches, and won three of them, with women’s wrestlers Adriana Gomez (50 kg) and Lorelei Hartman (Over 70 kg), plus men’s wrestler Dominic Porter (Over 90 kg) winning the bronze.
In the morning, Gomez won all three of her matches in Group B without giving up a single point. After a hard-fought 3-2 loss to eventual champion Ana Maria Rotaru of Romania in the semifinals, Gomez was perfect in the bronze-medal match. She used her speed and slick technique to get behind Rebeca Leanca of Romana three times, driving her down for a takedown each time and another 3-0 shutout.
Hartman was also perfect in Group A action, winning both of her matches handily. She was beaten with a throw in 13 seconds in the semifinals by eventual champion Daria Konstantynova of Ukraine. The bronze-medal bout was a rematch with Iringo Deri of Serbia, who Hartman had beaten in the first match. Hartman controlled the action most of the bout and scored a clutch point later in the match for a 2-1 victory.
Porter was 2-1 in Group A action, which gave him second-place in the Group and qualified him for the semifinals. After a close 4-2 loss to eventual champion Mersad Shakeri of Iran in the semifinals, Porter was ready for the bronze-medal bout against Athanasios Avramidis of Greece. In a back-and-forth match, Porter scored late to make it 2-2 with criteria. Avramidis took a serious shot as time ran out, but Porter deftly rotated his hips and knocked Avramidis to the sand for a 3-2 win. Avramidis challenged the move, which was reviewed and denied.
Although both lost bronze-medal bouts, women’s wrestler Amber Hunter Snyder (70 kg) and men’s wrestler Terrell McFarland (90 kg) both had impressive runs in the tournament to finish fourth. McFarland won all three of his group matches, before losing his final two bouts. Hunter Snyder had a 2-1 record in her Group, but scored enough classification points with clutch wrestling to advance to the semifinals.
Josiah Boyden was also impressive at men's 70 kg, powering his way into the quarterfinals before losing a tough match and ultimately placing seventh.
The United States women scored 50 team points to place second in the standings behind an impressive Ukraine squad that earned 85 points for the team title. The USA was a full 11 points ahead of third place Serbia with 39 points. The USA scored team points in all four weight classes, with Esperanza Huitron’s seventh place at 60 kg adding key points to the effort.
It was the second straight year that the USA won a U20 Women’s Beach World second place trophy, after also finishing as runners-up in 2024. It was the third straight year that Team USA won a U20 Women’s team trophy, after also placing third in both 2023.
The U.S. U20 men placed a solid sixth in the team standings with 35 points, and scored team points in three of the four weight classes. Iran won the team title with 77 points, 20 points ahead of runner-up Moldova.
The age-group Beach Worlds have ended, but Beach wrestling continues this weekend with Beach World Series Katerini on Saturday and Sunday, the fourth stop of the five-event 2025 Beach World Series.
