TAIYUAN, China - The United States went 1-2 in pool competition during the first day of the Women's World Cup, placing them in the fifth-place match on Sunday.
The USA won its first match of the day with a 7-0 shutout over Belarus. Host China defeated the USA in the second bout, 6-1. In the final match of the day, the USA was edged by perennial World power Japan, 4-3.
The star for the USA during Saturday's action was Stephany Lee (Colorado Springs, Colo./Sunkist Kids) at 72 kg/158.5 lbs. Lee won all three of her matches during the day, including a stunning pin of 2008 Olympic champion Wang Jiao of China for the only U.S. win in the dual meet against China.
Winning two bouts for the USA on Saturday were Helen Maroulis (Rockville, Md./New York AC) at 51 kg/112.25 lbs. and Deanna Rix (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) at 59 kg/130 lbs.
The USA will face Russia in the fifth-place match on Sunday. The other pairings for the medal rounds are Canada against China for first place, Japan against Ukraine for third place and Belarus against Mongolia for seventh place.
"We let some matches slip away from us today that cost us some dual meets," said National Women's Coach Terry Steiner. "We need to bounce back tomorrow."
