All three U.S. freestyle wrestlers who competed Sunday at the Dmitri Korkin International Championships in Yakutsk, Russia won medals.
Travis Paulson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) won a silver medal at 74 kg/163 lbs., while bronze medals were captured by Shawn Bunch (Colorado Springs, Colo./Gator WC) at 60 kg/132 lbs. and Sean Stender (Cedar Falls, Iowa/Sunkist Kids) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs.
Paulson was defeated in the closing seconds of a competitive finals match against Leonid Spiridonov of Kazakhstan, who was fifth in the 2008 Olympic Games at 66 kg/145.5 lbs.
In the third and deciding period, Paulson was leading 1-0, but Spiridonov secured a leg attack and was able to complete the technique for a takedown with about 12 seconds left in the bout. Spiridonov won the period by scoring the last point of the period to take the match, two periods to one.
Paulson won three matches to earn a spot in the championship finals.
Both Bunch and Stender won their preliminary matches to qualify for the semifinals, where they lost their only match. Bunch was Russia's Sot in the semifinals, while Stender was defeated in a close battle by Djoev of Russia in the semifinals.
Bunch came back in the bronze medal match to defeat Pemir Pesterov of Russia in two straight periods.
Stender dominated both periods before pinning Petrov of Russia in the bronze-medal match.
Six of the seven U.S. wrestlers who competed at the Dimitri Korkin International won medals. On Saturday, Steve Mocco (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) and Trent Paulson (Lincoln, Neb./Sunkist Kids) captured gold medals, and Bryce Hasseman (Colorado Springs, Colo./New York AC) captured a bronze medal.
The U.S. athletes will next head to Kahasavyurt, Russia to compete with a larger delegation of American wrestlers at the Shamil Oumakhanov International Championships on Oct. 18-19.
"The development is there," said U.S. coach Terry Brands of the performance of the U.S athletes in Yakutsk. "They did a good job of focusing on what need to do to be competitive. This solidified it for them in their minds. They should be ready to compete in Dagestan next week."
