Alyssa Lampe finished third at 48 kg/105.5 lbs. to lead the U.S. women's freestyle team at the FILA Junior World Championships, Friday, August 1, in Istanbul, Turkey.
Lampe (Tomahawk, Wis./USOEC) posted wins over Liliana Santos of Portugal and Anna Lukasiak of Poland before losing to Fuyuko Mimura of Japan in the semifinals. Lampe topped Lenka Matejova of Slovakia to take third place.
Michaela Hutchison (Soldotna, Alaska) lost in the first round to Irina Kisel of Russia. However, because Kisel made it to the finals at 55 kg/121 lbs., Hutchison had the opportunity to wrestleback. She won her first wrestleback over Katarzyna Krawczuk of Poland, then lost to Anastasija Grigorjeva of Latvia to miss out on a medal.
Schuyler Brown (Montpelier, Va./USOEC) and Paige Rife (Fowlerville, Mich./USOEC) both suffered first round losses. Hanna Savenia of Belarus defeated Brown and Eva-Maria Maierhofer of Austria beat Rife.
The U.S. finished third in the women's freestyle team standings. Russia was first with 61 points and Japan was second with 52, while the U.S. had 43 points.
Action in men's freestyle starts tomorrow with 50 kg, 60 kg, 74 kg, and 96 kg being contested. The seeds for these four weights have been announced.
