LAS VEGAS, NEV. - A pair of 2007 FILA Junior World Team members captured titles at the Men's FILA Junior National Greco-Roman Championships at the Las Vegas Convention Center on Wednesday.
2007 World Team members Tyler Cox (Gillette, Wyo./Camel Kids) at 50 kg/110 pounds and Jake Deitchler (Anoka, Minn. Minnesota Storm) at 66 kg/145.5 pounds captured national titles.
Cox defeated 2008 FILA Cadet national champion Ryan Mango (St. Louis, Mo./Team St. Louis) in a competitive finals match, 6-0, 0-5, 10-3. In the deciding third period, Mango scored the first three points, but Cox threw him twice late in the match and scored 10 unanswered points. Cox was named Outstanding Wrestler in the tournament.
"(National Developmental Coach) Ike Anderson helped me with my throws at the Olympic Training Center as well as my defense. It helped me tremendously. I want to thank the guys at the Training Center for helping me," said Cox.
Cox placed fifth at the 2007 Junior World Championships and is seeking a chance to return to win a medal this year.
"I wanted to see how I wrestled with the new 110-pounders and how I might do at the Trials. I wanted to see if I can get back on the Junior World Team," said Cox.
Deitchler, who placed second at the 2007 FILA Junior Nationals, won the national title this year with a 1-1, 7-1 victory over Donald Vinson Jr. (Marathon, NY/Shamrock Wrestling Club) in the finals. Like Cox, he entered this tournament with an ultimate goal of making another FILA Junior World Team.
"It is a step along the way for me," said Deitchler. "I expected to win this and I did. I had to work hard to make weight. I am very big at this weight class."
Deitchler will also compete at the U.S. Senior Nationals in Greco-Roman, and is one of the eight wrestlers who have separated into the final portion of the tournament on Friday. He has been nationally ranked on the Senior level all season. He believes competing in the FILA Junior event will help him during the Senior competition.
"These matches are great for me. It gets my first match jitters out. I train hard. I expect it to be a grind. I love that," said Deitchler.
The FILA National champions will earn the No. 1 position on top of the ladder for the FILA Junior World Team Camp and Trials, set for Colorado Springs, Colo. in May. Champions at the Junior World Team Trials in Colorado earn the chance to wrestle in the Junior World Championships in Istanbul, Turkey, July 29 to August 8.
FILA Junior athletes are ages 17-20 years old and include many of the nation's best high school wrestlers, as well as underclassmen from the college level.
There were four returning champions in the field, and none were able to win a gold medal. The only returning national champion to reach the finals was Nikko Triggas (Moraga, Calif./Ohio State, who placed second. Jimmy Chase (Hanover Park, Ill./Pinnacle) defeated Triggas, the 2007 University Nationals champion, in the finals, 5-1, 4-0.
"We had some bad blood. He beat me at Fargo and at the Ironman in the past. I came down to 121 pounds and wanted to get it done here," said Chase.
Chase was able to score throws on Triggas and other opponents during the day.
"I have been working on my throws a lot," said Chase. "They are working well for me. Nobody stopped me today."
Returning champions who were unable to reach the finals were Justin Forrest (Mo West Championship WC) at 55 kg/121 lbs., Vincent Salminen (MinnKota WC) at 74 kg/163 lbs. and Brandon Sitch (Minnesota Storm) at 79 kg/174 lbs.
Forrest was defeated in the quarterfinals by Chase, 0-5, 3-8 and finished 3rd.
Salminen dropped a semifinals match to Ben Provisor of Dennis Hall/World Gold WC, 0-6, 0-8 and finished fifth. Sitch fell in the first round to Josh Miller of the Kelso WC, 2-3, 0-2 and finished third.
Earning a second USA Wrestling age-group national title this month was John Drendel (N. Aurora, Ill./USOEC), who scored an impressive 7-1, 9-0 techical fall over 2007 Sombo National champion Jake Bohn (Kentwood, Mich./Team Michigan in the finals at 70 kg/154.25 lbs. Drendel won a gold medal at the University National Championships in Akron, Ohio two weeks ago.
"I think I wrestled well," said Drendel. "I am coming off a shoulder injury. I am happy with how I wrestled. I have a few things I have to clean up."
Drendel, who competes with the USOEC program at Northern Michigan Univ., was joined as an individual champion by USOEC teammates Zac Nielsen (Zimmerman, Minn./Minnesota Storm) at 84 kg/185 lbs., Mike Rossetti (Chicago, Ill./USOEC) at 96 kg/211.5 lbs. and Peter Kowalczuk (Oak Park, Ill./USOEC) at 120 kg/264.5 lbs.
Nielsen defeated Brent Eidenschenk (Minneapolis, Minn./Minnesota Storm) in the finals, 5-1, 2-2. Rossetti stopped Dallas O'Malley (Stoughton, Wis./Dunkirk Possums) in the finals, 6-0, 3-2. Kowalczuk defeated Kurt Klimek (Carlsbad, Calif./Titan WC) in the finals, 6-0, 3-1.
