Jonny Ruggiano of Pear Blossom, Calif. has been named Titan Mercury Wrestling Club Man of the Year. Ruggiano serves as Director of Media and Design for Titan Mercury.
It is the first time that Titan Mercury WC has given this award. One of the world’s most successful wrestling clubs, Titan Mercury’s goal “is to better the wrestling skills and mindset of our kids, high school, college, senior-level and international wrestlers by implementing support in all areas of development concerning the main characteristics of ‘What It Takes’ to be successful on and off the mat.”
“It is a great honor to receive this award. We have a mission to foster, promote and evolve wrestling. Andy (Barth) and Wayne (Boyd) desire to see it evolve to a greater level than we’ve ever seen. We have seen some amazing things in recent years. It is the most exciting time in wrestling right now. For example, college wrestlers Kyle Snyder and J’Den Cox, both who are with Titan Mercury, won Olympic medals this year. It is great to be around like-minded people who want to grow the sport. There is room for a lot of growth. Wayne, Andy and Milena (Wick) are working hard to see it grow,” he said.
Ruggiano has a variety of responsibilities with Titan Mercury. He handles marketing and media efforts for the club, and works to improve its branding. He is involved in numerous projects designed to grow the club and the sport. He manages the club’s website and products store, its graphic design and social media activities.
He got involved with Titan Mercury in late 2013, serving as an active volunteer and leader with the Freestyle World Cup event which was coming to Los Angeles in 2014. Titan Mercury led the organizing committee for the World Cup, and Ruggiano became more involved after being part of that major event promotion.
In addition to working with Titan Mercury WC, Ruggiano is a teacher at Lancaster High School in California, where he teaches multi-media courses plus art and sculpture.
He was a two-time state runner-up for Mead High School in Spokane, Wash. under the legendary coach Cash Stone. He competed at Highline Junior College for a year, and completed his undergraduate education at Eastern Washington University, where he received an art degree with a minor in Japanese. Ruggiano added a Master’s degree in Teaching at Whitworth University.
Ruggiano coached wrestling for 11 years as a head coach at Palmdale and Lancaster High Schools in California, and was also an assistant coach in his native Spokane.
“It is awesome to receive this award, but I am even more excited about what the future holds. Working with Titan Mercury Wrestling Club is a dream come true. I am blessed to be a part of it,” said Ruggiano.
