James Green awarded 70 kg bronze medal at the Ziolkowski International in Poland on Sunday. |
Futrell opened competition with an enormous 10-2 win over 2012 Olympic champion Dyamal Otarsultanov of Russia. The win was a springboard for Futrell as he made a run to the 61 kg/134 lbs. finals with wins over Ivan Guidea of Romania and Recep Topal of Turkey. His stellar run was stopped just short of gold by 2016 Asian champion Daulet Niyazbekov of Kazakhstan, 10-0.
2015 World bronze medalist Green went 3-1 overall on his way to bronze with his only loss coming at the hands of 2015 World silver medalist Ikhtiyor Navruzov of Uzbekistan, 10-8, in the 70 kg/154 lbs. quarterfinals.
Two-time NCAA champion Gwiazdowski dropped a tight, 8-7, match to 2016 Russia Nationals champion Muhamadgazi Magomedov in his opener at 125 kg/275 lbs. Gwiazdowski battled through the repechage to beat Diaaeldin Gouda of Egypt and two-time Olympian Oleksandr Khotsianivskyi of Ukraine by 5-0 margins to claim bronze.
“It was a day of mixed bag results. Overall it was a good performance in a very strong and talent filled tournament. Mistakes were made by everyone that cost each of our them, but it wasn't due to lack of effort and ability. All will be able to take something from this weekend and become a better wrestler because of it,” said U.S. coach Jamill Kelly.
The U.S. had two representatives at 86 kg/189 lbs. in 2016 Alexander Medved International silver medalist Richard Perry and 2012 Junior World silver medalist Patrick Downey. Perry finished in fifth place overall with a 2-2 performance, while Downy dropped his first bout to Ahmed Bilici of Turkey, 6-3.
On the women’s freestyle side at the Poland Open, two-time Olympian Elena Pirozhkova gathered a fifth place finish at 63 kg/138.75 lbs. Pirozhkova, a four-time World medalist, won her first two matches convincingly over Agata Tatar of Poland and Hanna Johansson of Sweden to make the semifinals. She then dropped back to back decisions to 2016 Asian bronze medalist Rui Xu of China, 3-1, and four-time World medalist Taybe Yusein of Bulgaria, 4-1, to fall to fifth.
All in all, the U.S. collected five medals across the three international styles this weekend in Poland. In addition to Futrell, Green and Gwiazdowski, 2014 Junior World silver medalist Joey McKenna earned a bronze in men’s freestyle and 2015 U.S. World Team member Patrick Martinez secured a bronze in Greco-Roman.
