HUTCHINSON – University of Minnesota wrestling coach J Robinson has been placed on paid administrative leave, new athletic director Mark Coyle announced Wednesday.
Shortly before making the trip to the Crow River Country Club for the scheduled Gopher Road Trip caravan stop Wednesday, Coyle met with Robinson and informed him of the decision, Coyle told media Wednesday. Coyle said Robinson will remain on administrative leave through the completion of the school’s internal investigation of the allegations of drug abuse within the wrestling program.
A Gophers wrestler told the Star Tribune last week four teammates had acquired 2,500 pills of the prescription sedative Xanax earlier this year and were selling them to teammates and others. The wrestler, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, said 10-12 teammates were also abusing the drug, and that Robinson had learned of the abuse and selling and offered to grant them amnesty if they confessed to him in written essays.
