Cox wins OW, while Canada and Norway spice up Western Junior Girls Regionals in Las Vegas

LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Hailey Cox of the Champions WC in Utah won the 130 pound title and was named Outstanding Wrestler at the Western Junior Girls Regionals on Friday. This tournament grew in entries for the third straight year.
Cox scored a 10-0 technical fall over Ke`ane Talledo of Team Nevada in the championship finals. She won all three of her bouts for the tournament with 10-0 technical falls. Cox was a member of the 2014 U.S. Cadet World Team.
“I thought it was a really good tournament. I don’t think I had any points scored on me, so it was really fun. I was working on being quick and working on my moves. My goal is to make the World Team again, go down to Body Bar Nationals and win there, and hopefully go back to Fargo and win there again, too,” said Cox.
This year’s tournament had a distinct international flavor, as strong clubs from Canada and Norway attended the meet. Five of the gold medals went to foreign competitors.
The Coast Wrestling Club from Vancouver area of Canada had three individual champions, Alexia Seal at 105, Jacqueline Lew at 112 and Victoria Seal at 121. Alexia Seal and Jacqueline Seal will be competing on one of Canada’s age-group Pan American teams later this year. All three of these athlete won their championship matches by technical fall.
“Our club came down and a few other kids from Vancouver Island. Our team is one of the best clubs in British Columbia and in Canada. We have been wrestling all season and we just finished Nationals. This is kind of a cool-down tournament for us. Half of our team made the Pan Am team,” said Alexia Seal.
Norway’s champions included Gunn Rita Boine at 139 pounds and Catherine Frilseth at 159 pounds. Boine scored a pin over Melissa Jacobs of Minnesota in the finals in 1:32. Frilseth scored a pair of technical falls in her three-athlete roundrobin.
“My high school, we travel every year to a place to compete or train in other countries, because we need to practice. We go home Tuesday. I felt I wrestled really well and I am happy,” said Boine.
In a highly-contested finals match, Brooke Logan of Grindhouse scored a 13-10 win over Sadie Tackett of No Mercy School of Wrestling in the 148 pound finals. Logan trailed 10-8 in the second period, but scored the five final points to get the victory.
Claiming gold medals by winning roundrobins in their weight classes were Clare Garcia of the Titan Mercury WC (117), Erin Geddie of Esquimalt WC (172) and Nkechinyere Nwankwo of 3-Style (198).
Winning uncontested weight classes were Alanis Ventura of 3 Style (125) and Jalynne Hooker of Los Banos Tigers Wrestling (198+)
