The Illinois Outsiders, lead by unbeaten Jack Jessen, won their second straight NWCA/USAW Scholastic Nationals this past weekend. The Outsiders won seven dual meets during the two days of competition held April 15th and 16th on the campus of Wabash College in Crawfordsville, Indiana.
In the Gold Pool, the Outsiders dominated the competition, winning all of the duals by 18 or more points, including a 34-16 victory over runner-up Ohio Mafia.
The Outsiders tallied easy victories in the first two rounds over the Indiana Gorillas (34-13) and Indiana Blue (49-9). They turned their sights on Team Colorado in round three and came up victorious by the score of 40-21 and took down the Mafia in round four.
The Outsiders won nine of the 14 matches against the Mafia, including two pin and a major decision. Jessen made quick work of the Mafia’s Aaron Huff with a pin in 38 seconds at 170 lbs. and just three matches later the Outsider’s Wes Kramer pinned Benito Guerrero in just 17 seconds at 285 lbs. Cole Bateman tallied an 18-6 major decision for the Outsiders at 195 lbs. over the Mafia’s Kieler Foster.
Following their showdown with the Mafia, the Outsiders finished up the tournament with an easy 42-17 win over Indiana Gold, for a 5-0 record in the Gold Pool.
The Ohio Mafia won six of their dual matches for a second place finish while Indiana Gold placed third posting a 5-2 record. Team Kentucky and Team North Dakota were seeded first in their pools, but suffered early round losses to Indiana's Blue and Gorilla squads.
The Outstanding Wrestler Award went to both Jordan Decatur (113 weight class) from Ohio, and Cohlton Schultz (220 weight class) from Colorado.
Decatur tallied two pins and three major decisions in Gold Pool competition while Schultz recorded two wins by decision, a major decision, a tech-fall and a pin.
The Team Sportsmanship Award went to Team North Dakota. Complete results are available on Trackwrestling.
