Tate Orndorff selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Tate Orndorff (Spokane, Wash./Utah Valley University) has been selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week on Nov. 12, 2019.
Orndorff put together an impressive performance en route to winning the Journeyman Collegiate Classic this past weekend in Troy, N.Y.
Ranked No. 10 in the nation, Orndorff took down a pair of top-three ranked wrestlers for the heavyweight title.
He began his tournament with a major-decision victory over Connor Webb of the University of Oklahoma, 16-3.
In the semifinals, Orndorff navigated his way past 2019 All-American Jordan Wood of Lehigh, who was ranked No. 3 at the weight, with a 5-2 decision.
Orndorff then took on No. 2 Tanner Hall of Arizona State, who is a 2017 All-American. A pair of stalling calls and an escape in favor of Orndorff gave the Wolverine a 3-1 win, completing a perfect 3-0 record on the day.
All this came less than a week after Orndorff returned from the 2019 U23 World Championships in Budapest, Hungary, where he competed in Greco-Roman action.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
