Cohlton Schultz selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Cohlton Schultz (Parker, Colo./Sunkist Kids) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on May 21, 2019.
Schultz earned a bid to Final X after winning the Senior World Team Trials Challenge Tournament at 130 kg in Greco-Roman, going through some insane competition over the two-day tournament.
Schultz, a 2017 Cadet World champion and 2018 Junior World bronze medalist, began his tournament with a first-period 8-0 tech fall over Ike Okoli. In the semifinals, he shut out multiple-time National Team member Toby Erickson with a 6-0 win to advance to the challenge bracket finals.
There, Schultz stormed back from a 3-1 deficit against 2018 National Team member Jacob Mitchell, scoring a pin at the 5:23 mark.
The 18-year-old had one more opponent to go through—four-time World Team member and 2016 Olympian Robby Smith, who was sitting out in the best-of-three finals. Winner secured a spot in Final X.
Schultz dropped the first match to the veteran and former training partner, 2-1, but bounced back, forcing the series to a third match with a 2-1 win of his own.
In the third bout, Smith led on criteria, but with just about 30 seconds left, Schultz took a 5-1 lead on a caution-and-two and failed challenge. The lead proved to be too big for Smith to overcome, giving the youngster the series win and a bid to Final X.
For the Senior World Team spot, Schultz, who has already secured a spot on the 2019 Junior World Team, will take on 2018 World silver medalist Adam Coon at Final X in Lincoln on June 15.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
