Marc-Anthony McGowan selected as USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Marc-Anthony McGowan (Tampa, Fla./BLR) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on August 7, 2019.
Last week, McGowan won gold at 45 kg at the 2019 Cadet World Champions in Sofia, Bulgaria in men’s freestyle.He was the only American to bring home gold in any style.
Leading up to the finals, McGowan defeated Suraj Annikeri of India, 7-2, followed by Edik Harutyunyan of Armenia, 5-3, and Tolga Ozbek of Turkey, 2-2.
His finals opponent, Ali Mehran Arab Firouzjaei of Iran led late in the match, 1-1, on criteria. With ten seconds remaining, McGowan scored a takedown off a snap down to take the match 3-1. McGowan was the youngest member of the Cadet men’s freestyle team.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
