Ty Mills named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week
by Taylor Miller, USA Wrestling
Ty Mills (Brownsburg, Ind./Team Indiana) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on April 18, 2018.
Mills, unranked at 126 pounds, pinned four-time Missouri state champion and No. 1 Malik Johnson in last weekend’s Dream Team Classic, where 10 of Indiana’s best high school wrestlers took on a squad composed of the best wrestlers from other parts of the nation in a dual.
Mills trailed 4-0 after the first two periods, giving up a takedown and reversal, but confident in his top-game, Mills chose top to start the final period.
The Indiana native put up a tough ride, drawing a stall warning from Johnson, who was also a 2017 Cadet Greco-Roman World Team member. With just over 30 seconds left, in a scramble for control, Mills locked up a cradle over Johnson was awarded the pin at the 5:25-mark, sending the Brownsburg High School arena into a frenzy.
Committed to Duke, Mills is a four-time Indiana state placer, with two runner-up finishes and two third-place finishes.
Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling from youth programs through the senior level. Twitter fan votes also play a part in decision.
To nominate a wrestler for this honor please send the athlete's name, wrestling program, weekly accomplishments and career accolades to USA Wrestling Communications Coordinator Taylor Miller at tmiller@usawrestling.org.
