Haley Augello named USA Wrestling Athlete of the Week

Haley Augello (Lockport, Ill./New York AC) has been selected as TheMat.com Athlete of the Week on March 28, 2016.


Augello dominated the 53 kg/116.5 lbs. weight class at the Women’s University Nationals in Oklahoma City, Okla. over the weekend to earn top prize.


Currently ranked No. 3 on the U.S. ladder at 53 kg, Augello won all four of her matches by technical fall, all the while surrendering just one point throughout the competition. She defeated defending University Nationals champion Amy Fearnside (Titan Mercury WC) 12-1 in the gold medal match.


In December, Augello finished as runner-up at the U.S. Open at 53 kg to qualify herself for the U.S. Olympic Team Trials being held in Iowa City, Iowa on April 9-10. She was third at the U.S. World Team Trials in 2015.


Wrestling collegiately for King University, Augello accumulated two WCWA national titles during her freshman and sophomore years prior to taking an Olympic redshirt this season.


Augello won a Cadet World gold medal in 2011. In addition, she was a member of two U.S. Junior World Team’s (2012, 2013), twice won the Junior Nationals (2010, 2011) and was a two-time ASICS Girls High School Wrestler of the Year (2012, 2013).


On the senior level internationally, Augello has won a silver medals at the Dave Schultz Memorial International (2015) and New York AC International (2012), on top of bronze medals at the Pan American Championships (2013) and Klippan Lady Open (2013).


Each week USA Wrestling will select an Athlete of the Week based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
