Sam Hazewinkel (Norman, Okla./Sunkist Kids) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Feb. 21-27.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Hazewinkel won a freestyle gold medal at 55 kg/121 lbs. at the Pan American Championships on Sunday at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs. He had previously placed second and third in this event.
Hazewinkel avenged a loss from earlier this month when he defeated Cuba's Alfredo Cisnero Gomez 1-0, 0-1, 2-0 in the semifinals. He then downed Canada's Jacob Hergenhein 2-0, 3-0 in the finals.
Hazewinkel was one of six U.S. champions in freestyle.
Hazewinkel finished second at the U.S. World Team Trials in 2011.
