Cheney Haight (Boise, Idaho/New York AC) has been named TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week for Aug. 16-22.
Each week, TheMat.com will select an Athlete of the Week, based upon performance within wrestling for that week. The selection committee will consider any level of wrestling, from youth programs through the Senior level.
Haight turned in an excellent week of training at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs while continuing preparations for next month's World Championships in Greco-Roman wrestling.
"Cheney fought very hard through a rough week of training" U.S. National Coach Steve Fraser said. "He's working hard to prepare himself for the Worlds."
Haight will compete in his first World Championships at 84 kg/185 lbs. on Sept. 13 in Istanbul, Turkey.
Haight, 26, won the U.S. World Team Trials in June in Oklahoma City. He was second in April's U.S. Open. He won titles at the Sunkist Kids and New York AC tournaments earlier this season.
Note: To nominate a wrestler for TheMat.com Wrestler of the Week, send the athlete's name, accomplishments for the week and career accomplishments to Craig Sesker at csesker@usawrestling.org
