RIO DE JANEIRO, Brazil – Team USA wrapped the 2025 U17 Pan American Championships in style on Saturday at Centro de Entrenamiento de Niterói in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Eight men’s freestyle athletes secured a gold medal, and the U.S. collected it’s third team title in as many days.

The standout American performance came at 45 kg with California native Thales Silva storming to five blowout wins on his path to gold. Silva started the day with two pins and followed with three shutout technical falls, including an 11-0 thumping of Peru’s Francesko Canayo Ipushima in the gold medal match. Silva was presented the Golden Boot Award as the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Five entries doubled up in Brazil, adding a freestyle gold medal to a previously earned Greco-Roman gold medal from Thursday. Achieving the feat were Ariah Mills at 48 kg, Tommy Wurster at 55 kg, Arseni Kikiniou at 65 kg, Jayden James at 71 and JT Smith at 92 kg.

Additional champions for Team USA included Isai Fernandez at 80 kg and Alex Taylor at 110 kg. Both won the gold medal match by decision over a Canadian opponent. Fernandez was a bronze medalist and Taylor a silver medalist in Greco-Roman earlier this week.

The lone silver medal for Team USA went to Nicholas Sorrow at 60 kg. Sorrow dropped a tight, 10-9, decision to Frederick Bachmann Jr of Puerto Rico in the championship match.

51 kg entrant Carter Shin was defeated, 4-3, in the quarterfinals by Jorge Rios of Mexico and was not pulled into repechage. Shin wound up in seventh place at his weight class.

All told, the U.S. men tallied up a 33-2 combined record with five victories by pin and 22 by technical fall.

Team USA outpaced the field in the team standings at 228 points. Puerto Rico finished in second place with 147 points. Canada rounded out the top three with 144 points.
