Central Oklahoma puts Abney and Streck into finals, well ahead of Lander at NCAA Div. II Nationals

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa – No. 1 Central Oklahoma pushed their two top wrestlers into the finals, No. 1 seeds Dalton Abney (197) and Shawn Streck (285) and extended their lead over second-place No. 2 Lander after the semifinals session at the NCAA Div. II Nationals on Saturday morning.


Lander, which had four semifinalists, was only able to get one into the finals, No. 4 Logan Hall (184).


It was a tough tournament for No. 1 seeds, as four more were beaten in the semifinals


At 125 pounds, No. 5 seed Jaxson Rohman of Augustana-SD knocked off No. 1 seed and returning national champion Cole Laya of West Liberty, 4-3.


At 141 pounds, No. 4 seed Christian Small of Lake Erie edged No. 1 seed and returning national champion Zeth Brower of Lander, 8-6.


At 149 pounds, No. 5 seed Jason Hanenberg of Western Colorado controlled No. 1 seed Jacob Ealy of Pitt-Johnstown, 7-1.


At 184 pounds No. 4 Logan Hall of Lander edged No. 1 seed Billy Higgins of Nebraska-Kearney, 3-2.


There are only four No. 1 seeds in the finals, Abney, Streck, plus Quentrevion Campbell of Chadron State (133) and Abner Romero (St. Cloud State (174). Abney is the only 2022 NAIA Div. II national champion who is a finalist this year.


Rounding out the top five shortly after the semifinals were third-place Western Colorado, fourth-place St. Cloud State and fifth-place West Liberty. The consolation rounds are continuing.
