LOVES PARK, Ill.—The 16U Greco-Roman National Duals concluded with Iowa winning the national championship on Thursday in Loves Park, Illinois.
Iowa prevailed in a back-and-forth dual that saw the team capture the 16U national championship in a 38-32 victory over Illinois.
Illinois started the scoring at 88 pounds, with Vincent Demarco defeating Iowa’s Ethan Humphrey by 8-0 technical fall. At 94 pounds, Iowa’s Hayden Schwab responded with an 8-0 technical fall keeping the dual score close.
In the 100 pound match, Illinois gained the advantage, scoring three team points with Caleb Noble’s 9-3 decision.
Iowa was able to take control in the next two weight classes at 106 and 113 pounds, winning both by decision.
At 120 pounds, Illinois’ Anthony Orozco-Diaz contributed three team points in a close 7-5 decision match.
The next two wins belonged to Iowa, with victories in the 126 and 132 pounds weight classes. Entering the matchup at 138 pounds, Iowa held an 18-14 advantage. Illinois bounced back at 138 pounds when Joseph Knackstedt defeated his opponent by 9-0 technical fall.
The wins at 145 and 152 also contributed six points to Illinois’ team score.
Iowa controlled the rest of the dual, capturing victories in five of the following weight classes, three of which were by technical fall.
The only pin of the dual came at 285 pounds, with Illinois’ Jeremy Marshall securing a win by fall just 91 seconds into the match.
In the third place dual of the Gold/Silver pool, Pennsylvania Blue defeated Wisconsin 42-32. Minnesota Blue fell in both of its first two rounds of the Gold/Silver pool but bounced back and bested Michigan Blue in the fifth place match. Team Utah ended with a close 38-37 victory over Tennessee and claimed seventh place.
The tournament resumes Friday at 8 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. MT with freestyle. All the freestyle action will begin with the first three rounds. Color pools will be decided in the afternoon.
