Semifinals set for Junior women’s freestyle, seven returning champions remain in the tournament

FARGO, N.D.—The first day of the 2023 USMC Junior/16U Nationals concluded Saturday night with the first two sessions of action completed. The semifinals are set for Sunday with seven 2022 champions remaining in the tournament and aiming to repeat.
All seven returning champions found their way into the semifinals in Clare Booe of Florida (112), Alexandra Szkotnicki of Maryland (117), Cadence Diduch of Illinois (132), Sydney Perry of Illinois (144), Mishell Rebisch of Michigan (152), Sabrina Nauss of Michigan (180) and Savannah Isaac of Ohio (200).
At 112 pounds, Booe navigated session two with a 12-1 technical fall of Riley Rayome of Texas in the quarterfinals and will face Gigi Bragg of Michigan in the semifinals on Sunday.
Szkotnicki of Maryland, competeing at 117 pounds, will face Angelina Cassioppi of Illinois in the semifinals. She pinned Jackeline Ramos of New Jersey in the quarterfinals to continue in the tournament.
Competing at 132 pounds, Diduch of Illinois moves on following a 6-0 decision over Celeste Detoles of Utah. Diduch will see Hanna Errthum of Wisconsin in the semifinals.
Perry, of Illinois, is set to face May Cuyler of Virginia in the semifinals. She defeated Presley Givens of Arkansas by 10-0 technical fall in the quarterfinals match.
At 152 pounds, Rebisch of Michigan pinned Adriana Palumbo of New York to return to the semifinals, where she will face Eduarda Rodrigues of California.
Nauss, of Michigan, matches up against Isabella Renfro of Missouri in the semifinals after defeating Maria Aiono of Nevada by 10-0 technical fall.
The last returning champion heading to the semifinals is Savannah Isaac of Ohio. Isaac bested Maggie Smith of Wyoming in a 13-8 decision to remain in the winner’s bracket.
Tilisa Matakaiongo of Utah fell in the quarterfinals and is no longer eligible to become the first ever Junior Women’s Triple Crown winner.
In the team race, Michigan leads with six athletes in the semifinals and 42 points. Illinois trails closely with five athletes in the semifinals and 35 points. California, Colorado and Missouri are in a three-way tie for third place, each with four athletes and 28 points.
The semifinal session will begin at 9 a.m. on Sunday. Action can be followed at FloWrestling.
