No. 6 Ohio State closes dual meet season with 22-14 win over No. 4 Cornell in Tampa, Fla.

COLUMBUS, Ohio – No. 6 Ohio State (13-3) traveled to Tampa, Florida, to face No. 4 Cornell (12-3) Saturday in the Spartan Combat Duals at the Tampa Convention Center. The Buckeyes came away with a 22-14 win in the final dual competition of the 2022-23 season.

141 | No. 19 Dylan D'Emilio (OSU) def. Ethan Fernandez (COR) | D, 6-1

D’Emilio gets the late first-period takedown to lead 2-0. The Buckeye added a point with an escape to open the second to lead 3-0 with two minutes to go. Fernandez escaped early in the third but was then called for stalling to make it 4-1 D’Emilio. With an added takedown, D’Emilio got the win by decision, 6-1.


149 | No. 3 Sammy Sasso (OSU) def. Sal Jones (COR) | MFF

Sasso earned a pair of quick takedowns and added another to lead 6-2 after the first. Sasso added a point with an escape to open the second. He added a takedown and another escape following some Jones injury time for a 9-2 lead. After a delay because of the clock, Sasso got a takedown before Jones medically defaulted.


157 | No. 24 Paddy Gallagher (OSU) def. Cole Handlovic (COR) | MD, 14-6

Handlovic scored first with a takedown but Gallagher escaped and got a quick takedown for a 3-2 lead after the first. From the down position, Gallagher escaped to make it 4-2 Buckeyes. Handlovic was called for the second time for stalling and then Gallagher added a takedown for a 7-2 advantage. Handlovic added an escape point in the third before a Gallagher takedown made it 9-3. The redshirt-freshman Buckeye finished off the match for a win by major decision, 14-6.


165 | No. 8 Julian Ramirez (COR) def. Klay Reeves (OSU) | TF, 16-1

An early takedown by Ramirez and a Reeves, who moved up two weight classes, escape made it 2-1 Cornell. Ramirez added a takedown and two four-point near falls before winning the bout by technical fall,


174 | Christian Hansen (COR) def. Isaac Wilcox (OSU) | SV-1, 6-4

Hansen got a takedown before a Wilcox escape made it 2-1 Cornell after the first. Hansen escaped to open the second. Wilcox tied it (3-all) with a takedown. Hansen recorded an escape for a 4-3 lead headed to the third. Choosing down, Wilcox escaped to tie it again at 4-all sending the match to sudden victory. Hansen then got the win with a takedown for the 6-4 win.


184 | Gavin Bell (OSU) def. Ethan Hatcher (COR) | D, 10-9

Hatcher scored first with a takedown. Bell escaped for a 2-1 Cornell lead after the first. A Bell escaped tied and took a lead with a takedown. Hatcher escaped to make it 4-3 Buckeyes after two periods. Bell scored a four point near fall but Hatcher countered with a takedown. Leading 9-5, Bell held on for the 10-9 win by decision.


197 | No. 15 Jacob Cardenas (COR) def. Luke Geog (OSU) | D, 7-1

After the first, Cardenas led 2-0. With an early escape, Cardenas led 3-0. Geog was called for stalling and Cardenas added a takedown for a 6-0 lead. With a point for riding time, Cardenas won by decision, 7-1.


HWT | No. 17 Tate Orndorff (OSU) def. Brendan Furman (COR) D, 4-1

Choosing bottom after a scoreless first period, Furman escaped for a 1-0 lead. Orndorff tied it at 1-all with an escape in the third and then added a takedown for a 3-1 lead and a win by decision with an added point for riding time.


125 | No. 10 Malik Heinselman (OSU) def. Joe Sciarrone (COR) | D, 8-1

Heinselman scored first with a takedown before a two-point near fall made it 4-0 Buckeyes. Heinselman then added an escape point in the second for a 5-0 lead. Two stalling points on Cornell made it 7-0 Heinselman. After a Sciarrone escape and a point for riding time, Heinselman won by decision, 8-1.


133 | No. 3 Vito Arujau (COR) def. No. 8 Jesse Mendez (OSU) | D, 6-1

In a Top 10 matchup, Arujau scored first with a takedown in the final seconds of the first. An escape made it 3-0 Cornell. Mendez escaped in the third but Arujau, with a takedown and a point for riding time, win by decision 6-1.
