Athletes can still enter the 2022 U.S. Beach Nationals in Carolina Beach, N.C. on Saturday

The 2022 U.S. Beach National Championship will be held on Saturday this weekend in scenic Carolina Beach, N.C. Those who are able to get there are still encouraged to register, for a fun and competitive event for athletes of all ages.

For Senior men and women, the battle on the sand is part of the qualifying process for the 2022 Beach World Series events in Europe which includes stops in Turkey, Spain, France, Greece and Romania. Athletes receive points from each of the Beach World Series events and the wrestler who has scored the most points in each weight class is declared a World Champion.

Additionally, this year’s Beach Nationals will start the new U.S. Beach Tour of America, which will include state USA Wrestling sanctioned Beach competitions across the nation.

USA Wrestling is working to organize women’s and men’s teams to compete at the 2022 U17 and U20 Beach World Championships in Constanta, Romania on Sept. 1-2. Team USA has won several medals at international events but is still seeking its first gold medalist at a Beach World Series event or World Championship event.

This weekend, National champions will be named in the following age divisions: 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U, Junior, Senior Men, Senior Women and Masters. 158 athletes have registered to compete with more expected to enter in what will be both a fun, intense day of oceanside wrestling full of tough competition.

2021 U.S. Beach National Senior men’s champion Jamal Morris will return to the 80 kg weight class and will look to defend last year’s title. Morris was a two-time NCAA qualifier for NC State in 2016 and 2017 at 133 pounds. In 2017, he was named to the All-ACC team. On the beach last year, Morris swept his finals opponent Spencer Griffey of Tennessee in two straight bouts, 3-0 and 3-0.

New York star and current East Stroudsburg wrestler Mia Macaluso will compete at 60 kg for the Beach National Senior Women’s crown. Macaluso was on the 2021 Junior World Team where she represented the United States at the World Championships in Russia. She has two medals from the 2019 Pan American Championships —a gold in the Cadet division and a bronze in the Junior division.

Josie Davis of Ohio will also compete at 60 kg. Davis was the 2019 Cadet USA Girls Pre-Season Nationals Champion and the 2018 US Women's Nationals 3rd Place finisher. Davis is among a number of nationally ranked girls who will be wrestling.

2021 Girls 16U Beach champion Isabelle Carrington will return in the Junior Girls division in the 140-pound weight class for a chance at a second straight title. Carrington competed at the 2021 Beach World Championships in Constanta, Romania last September and finished tenth in the final standings.

Beach Wrestling is quickly growing in popularity and is a great way to improve wrestling skills for all styles. It opens the door for overseas opportunities and the international wrestling federation, United World Wrestling (UWW), is working to add Beach Wrestling for women at the 2028 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. This would allow wrestling to reach gender equity in the Olympics while continuing its commitment to the Greco-Roman style.

There is still time to register for this event and to get involved in this up-and-coming style. For more information, check out the U.S. Beach Nationals website.
