Loaded card of boys and girls high school stars, plus two Senior bouts, at Michigan Border Brawl on March 15 in Detroit

by USA Wrestling

While many people coming to the annual NCAA Championships week arrive on Wednesday, a large number of others get there on Tuesday. The “Border Brawl,” an all-star card traditionally held on Tuesday night, has become something that wrestling fans coming into town, or from the local community, enjoy attending while others watch at home online.

This year, the Missouri Border Brawl has travelled to the site of the 2022 NCAA Championships. It is now called Connection Wrestling Presents the 2022 Michigan Border Brawl, presented by Resilite and Nike.

It will be held on Tuesday, March 15 at the Huntington Place Grand Riverview Ballroom in downtown Detroit, starting at 6:00 p.m., with doors opening at 4:00 p.m. This is a charity fundraising event to benefit the military and wrestling organizations.

Most of the card will include high school boys and girls stars from Michigan competing against opponents from nearby states, as well as other talented wrestlers from across the nation. This year’s card includes one youth match, and two Senior-level matches (one men’s and one women’s).

“It started being held when the Nationals were held in Missouri. The event has done so well, we are taking it on the road. I want to give special thanks to Mario Flores and Jason Keck. Without their hard work and effort, the Michigan Border Brawl would not have been possible,” said event founder David Mirikitani.

The 18-match card will equally include nine matches for males and nine matches for females, which is a first for the Border Brawl Series and something that organizers are especially proud about.

“We are excited to have so many women’s matches on this year’s card. We support women’s wrestling and look forward to showcasing some of the nation’s best girls and women in Detroit,” said Mirikitani.

On the high school side, there are 15 nationally ranked wrestlers among the boys and girls on the card, and some intriguing matchups.

The girls matches include three No. 1 ranked athletes from Michigan: Cecilia Williams of Holt Lutheran School, Sabrina Nauss of Brighton High School and Eliana Bommarito of Hartland High School.

Williams will battle No. 6 ranked Angelina Vargas of Park Hill High School in Missouri at 115 pounds. There are two other ranked battles on the girls side. No. 25 Lydia Roope of St. Charles High School of Michigan against No. 15 Clarissa Agnostini of Eastwood Collegiate Institute of Canada, who is a Michigan native. No. 10 Bo Geibe of Constantine High School of Michigan faces No. 19 Millie Azlin of Broken Arrow High School of Oklahoma.

Two huge showdowns on the boys side are No. 5 Kannon Webster of Washington High School of Illinois against No. 5 Zan Fugitt of Nixa High School of Missouri at 126 pounds, plus No. 2 Brayden Thompson of Lockport Township High School of Illinois against No. 7 Josh Barr of Davison High School of Michigan at 172 pounds.

The men’s Senior match includes a two-time NCAA champion for Oklahoma State, Josh Heil, against former Princeton star Matthew Kolodzik at 65 kg. The women’s Senior match is between college wrestlers Kendra Ryan of North Central (a Michigan native) against Princeton’s Chloe Ayres at 115 pounds.

The Michigan Border Brawl will be broadcast live by FloWrestling.
