BUENOS AIRES, Argentina – Led by seven champions and three runners-up, the United States won the team title at the U17 Pan American Championships on Friday.

Team USA scored 235 points in the event, more than doubling the second-place team from Argentina, which had 107 points. Placing third was Brazil with 104 points, with 12 nations scoring team points.

The United States had an impressive 28-3 overall record in the 10 weight classes.

“Overall, the U.S. team wrestled with a lot of passion,” said U.S. coach Mike Pila. “Developmentally, it was a good tournament for them. For many of them, this was their first international experience,, but they trained and competed like veterans. The guys made adjustments in matches and wrestled hard, but with composure. Personally, I look forward to watching them grow as they move through the Junior and Senior ranks. They represented their country, clubs and families well, and they all have bright futures ahead. The staff is very proud of them.”

Claiming gold medals for Team USA were:
• Domenic Munaretto (Barrington, Ill.) at 45 kg
• Christian Castillo (Glendale, Ariz.) at 48 kg
• Edwin Sierra (Yuma, Ariz.) at 51 kg
• Zan Fugitt (Clever, Mo.) at 60 kg
• Joel Adams (Wahoo, Neb.) at 65 kg
• Sawyer Bartelt (Coral Gables, Fla.) at 92 kg
• Koy Hopke (Amery, Wis.) at 110 kg

U.S. champions who scored bonus point victories in all of their matches included Munaretto, Castillo, Sierra, Fugitt, Adams, Han-Lindenmyer, Bartelt and Hopke.

Capturing silver medals for the USA were Kael Lauridsen (Norfolk, Neb.) at 55 kg, KJ Evans (Edmond, Okla.) at 71 kg and Cole Han-Lindenmyer (Farmington, Minn.) at 80 kg

All 10 of the boys who competed in Greco-Roman today will also wrestle in freestyle on Sunday.

The competition continues on Saturday with the women’s freestyle division. Team USA has a full team of talented girls ready to wrestle tomorrow.
