Cook drops second pool bout, places fifth at 70 kg at Beach World Series in Sanxenxo, Spain

SANXENXO, Spain - Mitchell Cook of Orland Park, Ill., the lone U.S. entry at the Beach World Series on Silgar Beach in Sanxenxo, Spain, dropped his second Group A bout at 70 kg on Sunday, and did not advance to the knockout round.


On Sunday, he dropped a 3-0 match to Marwane Ahmed Yezza of France, and finished Group A with an 0-2 record. Yezza is also a current international freestyle wrestler, having represented France in both the Senior World Championships and Junior World Championships.


Cook was in a three-athlete round robin in Group A,, On Saturday, he was defeated by Levan Kelekhsashvili of Georgia, 3-0. Kelekhsashvili was second at the 2022 Beach World Series event in Sarigerme, Turkey in May. Kelekhsashvili is also a current international freestyle wrestler for Georgia, with a top career performance of fifth place at the 2013 Senior World Championships.


Kelekhsashvili placed first in Group A and Yezza placed second, and they advanced to the semifinals, where they were bracketed against the top two placewinners in Group B. Cook earned fifth place in the final standings, worth 5,000 points in the 2022 Beach World Series standings.


Cook placed second at the 2022 U.S. Beach National Championships at 70 kg. He is scheduled to compete in the next two Beach World Series events, in Saint Laurent du Var, France, July 1-2, and in Katerini-Pierria, Greece, July 9-10.


Georgia won three of the four men’s freestyle weight classes, while Ukraine won three of four of the women’s weight classes.
