U.S. women’s freestyle collects eight medals at U20 Pan Am Championships

OAXTEPEC, Mexico – USA Wrestling continued its dominance at the U20 Pan American Championships with the women’s freestyle team winning three gold medals, three silver and two bronze on Saturday.
Winning golds were Sage Mortimer (50 kg), Nanea Estrella (59 kg) and Skylar Hattendorf (62 kg).
Hattendorf, a 2019 Cadet World silver medalist, won all three matches by fall, including her finals bout against Thais Tertuliano Sales from Brazil. Mortimer tallied two pins and a technical fall, and Estrella collected four technical falls and surrendered only four points.
Silvers came from Estrella Dorado Marin (53 kg), Elleni Johnson (65 kg), Tiera Jimerson (68 kg), while Haley Ward (72 kg) and Rose Cassioppi (76 kg) scored bronze medals.
Amani Jones at 55 kg and Claire DiCugno at 57 kg finished fourth in their brackets.
Team USA scored 189 points for the first-place team finish, followed by No. 2 Mexico with 177 points and No. 3 Canada with 159 points. USA and Mexico led the field, each securing three gold medals.
Including yesterday’s Greco-Roman action the U.S. has earned 18 medals, including nine gold, five silver and four bronze.
The tournament wraps up on Sunday with men’s freestyle competition.
