2022 Southern Scuffle semifinal pairings set, all No. 1 and No. 2 seeds still alive, Missouri extends team lead

CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. --- The Sunday semifinals at the 2022 Southern Scuffle are set as Saturday night featured an entertaining round of quarterfinal bouts. Missouri (83.5 points) extended its lead in the team race and has seven semifinalists. North Dakota State is in second place with 61.5 points, while Michigan State is in third with 61 points.


Leading the way for Missouri is a pair of 157-pound semifinalists – Jarrett Jacques and Brock Mauller. Tiger standouts Keegan O’Toole (165) and Rocky Elam (197) also will compete for a chance to make the finals tomorrow afternoon.


North Dakota State has three wrestlers in the semifinals – Jared Franek (157), Luke Weber (165) and Brandon Metz (285).


For Michigan State, Rayvon Foley (133), Chase Saldate (157) and Cam Caffey (197) all have punched tickets to the semis.


Iowa’s Drake Ayala picked up the first upset of the session with an impressive 9-3 win over Missouri’s Noah Surtin, the third seed in the bracket. Surtin is ranked No. 13 by FloWrestling. Ayala will wrestle Minnesota’s No. 2 Pat McKee tomorrow.


Iowa has three others in the semifinals – Cullan Schriever (133), Brennan Swafford (174) and Aaron Costello (285).


Maryland’s sixth-seeded Kyle Cochran (184) is onto the semifinals after a strong showing on Saturday. Cochran knocked off Missouri’s third-seeded Jeremiah Kent, 5-0 in the quarters. He’ll match up against Virginia Tech standout Hunter Bolen in tomorrow’s semifinals.


Tomorrow, wrestling begins at 11:00 a.m. with consolation action. The semifinals begin at 1:00 p.m., with the finals and medal matches taking place at 7:00 p.m.
