ROSEVILLE, Calif. – One of the traditionally strongest girls high school tournaments continued to shine, as the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions completed on Saturday night.

There were 10 nationally ranked athletes among its medalists, including two weight classes in which both finalists were nationally ranked.

The 160-pound class was loaded, with the top three placewinners all in the national rankings. In the finals, No. 13 Johanna Forman of Northview pinned No. 9 Kalila Shrive of Merrill West in 4:57. No. 8 Kaiulani Garcia of Gilroy finished third. Forman edged Garcia, 6-4 in sudden victory in the semifinals.

The other all-nationally ranked finals was at 137 pounds, where No. 11 Taydem Khamjoi of Chavez stopped No. 14 Gianna DiBenedetto of Bella Vista, 6-2.

Other nationally ranked wrestlers who emerged as individual champions were No. 7 Rianne Murphy of Crown Point (IN) at 106, No. 2 Kiely Tabaldo of Menlo Atherton at 111, No. 12 Alex Waitsman of El Camino Real at 116 and No. 29 Loretta Lopez of Elk Grove at 126.

Champions Forman and Leilani Lazaro (121) were among seven place winners who led Northview of California to the team title with 164 points. Basha High School of Arizona was second with 142 points, with Gilroy High School of California third with 134.5 points. There were 78 teams which scored points in this massive event.

The first National Girls High School team ranking of the season is expected next week, and this event will play a big role in how that sorts out.

The tournament also included a college and a middle school division.
