Bonaccorsi, Phillippi return for Pitt wrestling

by University of Pittsburgh Athletics

PITTSBURGH—The University of Pittsburgh wrestling program received a huge boost to its 2022-23 lineup with the news this summer that Nino Bonaccorsi and Micky Phillippi have both officially decided to utilize their extra season of NCAA eligibility and compete for the Panthers for one more year.

Both Bonaccorsi and Phillippi are former All-Americans and two-time ACC champions with a combined 214 total collegiate wins to their credit, giving Pitt head coach Keith Gavin another season with two of the most accomplished and experienced wrestlers in the country on his roster.

The extra year of collegiate eligibility for the pair comes thanks to the NCAA's ruling that the 2020-21 athletic season would not count against the clock for wrestling student-athletes across the country.

"I'm super excited and feel blessed to have the opportunity to chase my dreams at Pitt for one more year," Phillippi said. "We are going to make the most of this opportunity. Hail to Pitt!"

"I'm also excited to return to Pitt for another year with the goal of fulfilling my dream of becoming a national champion," Bonaccorsi added.

Bonaccorsi, a native of nearby Bethel Park, Pa., is the two-time defending ACC champion at 197 pounds and was the runner-up in the weight class at the 2021 NCAA Championships. A four-time NCAA qualifier, Bonaccorsi owns 98 career wins during his collegiate career.

Known as one of the most relentless attackers in all of NCAA wrestling, Bonaccorsi will return as one of the favorites nationally at 197 pounds and seek his third consecutive conference title.

Phillippi, hailing from Derry, Pa., is also a four-time NCAA qualifier with multiple ACC titles to his name. Consistently a top-10 ranked wrestler at 133 pounds throughout his Pitt career, Phillippi has tallied 116 total wins during his college career with four straight appearances in the ACC final.

Also a standout in the classroom, Phillippi is a four-time All-ACC Academic Team selection and has earned NWCA Scholar All-America honors in three consecutive years.

Coach Gavin and the Panthers will announce their 2022-23 schedule later this summer ahead of the program's highly anticipated campaign following a summer of good news for Pitt wrestling.
