Ohio State, Purdue move up one spot in NWCA Div. I Coaches Poll after opening weekend victories

by Jason Bryant, NWCA

Manheim, Pennsylvania – It was a slow start to the Division I wrestling season in terms of dual meets as just a handful of teams competed in the opening week of the season. Ohio State's 23-12 win over North Carolina highlighted the action in the only matchup between ranked teams. It provided the slighted of the movement as the new NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll was released on Tuesday.

The Buckeyes (1-0) moved up one spot to No. 9, while North Carolina (2-1) fell a spot to No. 13. The Tar Heels opened up the season with wins over Division II Queens and NAIA Life on the first day of available competition.

Rutgers started the season 3-0 with a home quad meet and wins over Binghamton (34-9), Cleveland State (35-3) and Division III New Jersey City University (48-0).

No. 21 Purdue (2-0) moved up a spot after an eastern swing saw the Boilermakers top pesky Drexel 29-18 and Rider 33-3.

Like North Carolina, No. 22 Wisconsin went live on the first day of competition, topping visiting Buffalo 30-3 in Madison.

Lehigh fell out of the Top 25 this week after the Mountain Hawks fell to unranked Campbell 22-11 in a tri-meet hosted by Oregon State. It was the first victory for any Southern Conference team ever over Lehigh, which did rebound to beat Oregon State, which beat Campbell. All three teams received votes this week. Stanford didn't compete in any duals, but did slide into the rankings at No. 24.

This Week: No. 10 Nebraska hosts Division II Chadron State and Nebraska-Kearney on Thursday; Buffalo hosts No. 15 Pittsburgh on Friday, while No. 23 Wisconsin will face Little Rock in La Crosse, Wisconsin in an event that will feature Division I, Division II and Division III duals help simultaneously. It's a busy Saturday on the mats as well. Second-ranked Penn State will head across the state to Manheim to take on Sacred Heart and Oregon State; No. 6 Oklahoma State will go to No. 24 Stanford; Rutgers will head south to take on host Davidson, Clarion and Chattanooga in a quad. No. 17 Oklahoma will face host West Virginia; No. 25 Northwestern will host SIUE.
On Sunday, third-ranked Missouri hosts Northern Colorado, fourth-ranked Michigan hosts CSU Bakersfield and No. 20 Purdue heads to Cleveland State.

Methodology: The NWCA Division I Wrestling Coaches Poll is voted on by two coaches from each Division I wrestling conference. Each first-place vote is worth 25 points, 24 points for a second-place vote, 23 for a third-place vote and so on through to one point for a 25th-place vote. The poll is based on dual meet results.
