RENO – The 2021 Reno Tournament of Champions wrapped up on Sunday night, as Oregon State claimed the team title with five individual champions. Wyoming finished second with four individual winners in a team race that went down to the wire.

Oregon State officially claimed the tournament title when Gary Traub won in the final match of the night, the 285-pound finals. He knocked off Sam Aguilar of Cal Poly, 3-1. Other Oregon State individual champions were: Brandon Kaylor (125), Devan Turner (133), Grant Willits (141) and Trey Munoz (184).

Wyoming was impressive in Sunday’s action, sending five wrestlers into the finals. The Cowboy individual winners were: Jaron Jensen (149), Jacob Wright (157), Hayden Hastings (174) and Stephen Buchanan (197). At 184 pounds, Wyoming’s Tate Samuelson took second after being defeated in a 3-2 match by Munoz.

The only weight class that was not won by a wrestler from Oregon State or Wyoming was at 165 pounds, where Clarion’s Cameron Pine knocked off Matt Olguin of Oregon State, 7-4.

Stanford’s Jaden Abas, who is ranked No. 7 by FloWrestling at 149 pounds, won via fall or technical fall in his first three matches of the day before dropping a 5-4 bout to Oregon State’s Lane Stigall in the quarters. Abas was officially a medical forfeit in his consolation match, unable to finish the tournament.

Real Woods of Stanford (141 pounds), who is ranked 13th by FloWrestling, reached the semifinals but also did not finish the tournament due to a medical forfeit.

The next two major NCAA Div. I collegiate events over the holiday break are the Midlands Championships (Dec. 29-30) and the Southern Scuffle (Jan. 1-2). USA Wrestling will have on-site coverage from both events.
